Safes have been present in business for a long period of time. Originally, safes were often called “iron chests”, and were designed predominately to protect against burglaries. It wasn’t until between 1820 and 1840 that safes started being designed to protect contents from fire.
The 20th century fostered most of the developments in safe technology that we see today. The composite construction and internal mechanisms were developed to combat the different robbery tactics criminals were using. Security experts know that a safe is more than just an iron chest. It evolves as the threat evolves.
